Lionel Messi would set a new record: the sale price of his World Cup shirts is historic

The World Cup jerseys that have been worn in matches by Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi will soon be on sale and the prices are crazy.

Sotheby’s Director of Modern Collectibles Brahm Wachter said: “The 2022 FIFA World Cup is one of the most important events in sporting history, intrinsically connected to Messi’s brave journey and firmly establishing his status as the best player of all time”, he also stressed “The sale of these six shirts constitutes a monumental event in the history of auctions, and offers fans and collectors a connection with Messi’s greatest achievement.”

The auction will take place in New York City and will offer six of the seven official first-half jerseys, including the one Messi wore in the final match against France.

And although the auction is for collectors, it will take place between November 30 and December 14 with a free exhibition at Sotheby’s New York headquarters that will allow the public to view them for the duration of the auction.

It is estimated that the potential of the auction is exceeding 10 million dollars and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS Project, which is currently led by the Sant Joan de Déu Children’s Hospital in Barcelona and also has the support of the Foundation Leo Messi. The purpose of this project is to meet the needs of children with rare diseases.

Sotheby’s reports that the current record for a sports memorabilia item belongs to basketball star Michael Jordan and Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, for $10.1 million. Also sold at Sotheby’s New York last September 2022.

The current record for match-worn soccer sports memorabilia is Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey, which sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby’s London in May 2022. And in the Maradona has the same category, specifically in soccer, with the match that was consecrated as “The Hand of God” sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby’s in London in May 2022.
