Ken turns 60, the eternal love of Barbie!
Ken, the boyfriend of Barbie doll, turned 60 on Thursday and celebrated the historic birthday with a return to his original appearance. Ken, named after the son of Mattel founders Elliot and Ruth Handler, first met Barbie on the set of a television commercial in 1961.
Toy maker Mattel has recreated a version of Ken’s first doll, dressed in a red bathing suit, sandals and a yellow towel draped over his shoulders.
Over the years, he’s had multiple makeovers and careers, from firefighter to barista. It now features nine skin tones, three body shapes, 10 eye colors, and different hairstyles and hair types. There is also a Ken in a wheelchair.
Ken has also been styled by designers Dapper Dan and Tan France, as well as Berluti Creative Director Kris Van Assche, in various outfits for various occasions.
“While he evolved in terms of style, (he) was very modern and cool in the 60s (…) now it’s more about (…) different hair textures and hairstyles, different skin colors, as well as rendering of different abilities, “Barbie Senior Design Director Robert Best told Reuters.
