Mojito: the summer-flavored rum-based cocktail
Bacardi is now one of the best known and most consumed rums in the world. Varieties range from the original white rum to the smooth, honeyed gold.
It was founded by the Spaniard Facundo Bacardí Massó in 1962 in Santiago de Cuba, whose family emigrated to Cuba when Facundo was 16 years old. He perfected this spirit, developing a proprietary strain of yeast that gave Bacardi a clean flavor profile, using charcoal to filter out impurities and aging the rum in
white oak barrels to soften it. The result was the world’s first light or white rum.
When Fidel Castro’s Cuban Revolution took over Cuba in the 1960s, Bacardi hid its proprietary formula, brand and assets in the Bahamas. He eventually moved his operations to Puerto Rico and Mexico, which was beneficial for trade with the United States. Bacardi is nowhere to be found in bars and shops in Cuba today.
